Frank McCourt, teacher, author
The New York Times has a great article on Frank McCourt, who died yesterday at age 78. Beginning as a high-school English teacher, McCourt taught for three decades before transforming his classroom stories into his awarding winning novel, Angela’s Ashes.
McCourt’s unusual and interactive classroom style resinated with his students. One former student commented, “We all thought, ‘He’s such a genius, what’s he doing just teaching us?’ Everybody thought he was destined for bigger and better things. And when he became a global phenomenon, we felt it was justice.”
