Book Club Idea: Exploring Religion

When I received my copy of In the Land of Believers, I realized that I read quite a few books with strong religious angles.  I’m not a religious person at all and I find the topic really fascinating, so I thought it would be a great topic for a book club.  For the most diversity, I thought selecting books that highlight different religions would be most interesting.

What book with a strong religious angle would you recommend for this book club idea?

Christianity: The Unlikely Disciple by Kevin Roose – Kevin takes a semester off from Brown to attend Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.  Kevin does his best to fit in, pretend to be saved, make friends, pass his classes and date.

Judaism: The Romance Reader by Pearl Abraham – A girl grows up in an ultraorthodox Hasidic Jewish home.

Jehovah’s Witness: I’m Perfect, You’re Doomed by Kyria Abrahams – Kyria tells the story of growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness in RI.

Islam: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini – Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman, and Hassan, the son of Amir’s father’s servant, grow up in a turbulent Afghanistan.

This just reminded me that I want to read “23 Minutes in Hell”
