Back to School

September 8, 2010

I think its safe to say that the kids are back in school.  I got photos of my nephew on his first day of kindergarten and there are flocks of backpacks wondering the sidewalks of my neighborhood.  I’ve read quite a few books that revolve around school, are set at college or whose main characters are students.  To celebrate the back to school season, check out some of these “school books”:

  • Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami – Toru is a full time student who rediscovers his old friend Naoko while he’s studying in Tokyo.  Together the pair struggle to come to terms with their friend’s suicide.
  • Home Land by Sam Lipsyte – Lewis Miner narrates this story through a series of off-the-wall class notes he’s submitting to his high school newsletter.
  • The Coming Storm by Paul Russell – Tracy Parker is 25-year-old English instructor at an all boys private school in upstate New York.  His interactions with a student and the proper headmaster Louis Tremper result in chaos.
  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger –  Classic struggling hero Holden Caulfield has been expelled from his boarding school, travels to New York City trying to find his way in the world.

Those are great suggestions! I also love Carol Goodman’s boarding school books, such as The Lake of Dead Languages or Arcadia Falls.
